In the face of extreme pressure on ambulance service resources, South Central Ambulance Service have just raised their Resource Escalation Plan to a high level. Delays at hospitals mean ambulances cannot get back on the road as quickly as they would like and therefore there are delays in attending 999 calls.
They are asking that 999 is only used where there is a life threatening emergency and this is important, not just over Christmas but over the winter period. If it’s not life threatening, please use the 111 service, or speak with your pharmacist, GP, or attend a minor injuries or urgent care unit at hospital. If you have family with a car and it is appropriate, you can go direct to A & E if needed, and you can always get a taxi to take you. Keep the ambulance free for the life threatening emergencies.

As always, we ask people to ensure they have enough prescription medication to last over the holiday period and do not drink if the instructions tell you to avoid hospital.
